Why Matthew Scott?

Though I was first certified as a personal trainer in 2014, I've been training friends and family since 2010, and after a few years on my own, I became the head strength trainer at FitnessSF SoMa, known as San Francisco's big gay gym where all the hot bears train!

In 2002, when I was dragged kicking and screaming to a commercial gym for the first time by a friend who was sick of me whining, I weighed 135 pounds (61kg) and could barely lift a barbell. I was a bear trapped in the body of a twink, and I HATED it.

Soon after I started going to the gym regularly, I was hired by a supplement company based in Phoenix (Hi-Health) who insisted that their employees be highly knowledgable about nutrition, so I also became a nutrition counselor. Learning about nutrition helped me get the most out of my lifting, so I began to not only get results, but to understand what was possible in the gym: so much more than I had ever imagined!

I have more than doubled in weight, I'm 45 and in the best shape of my life, happier and healthier than I've ever been. My expertise makes me uniquely able to help both smaller guys who want to get bigger, and bigger guys who want to get buffer.

I always say: if you want to lose weight, talk to the bouncy, happy people at the front desk. If you want to get bigger and stronger, talk to me!

I've competed as a powerlifter, and was certified as a powerlifting coach, but my real love is just lifting itself - everyone has different goals; let me help you with yours!
